A crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” used to restore a tooth that is damaged, broken, or worn down. It restores the affected tooth’s shape and size and also strengthens it. This helps to prevent the need for other restorative work in the future. The result is a solid, natural-looking tooth that is protected from further damage or decay.
At Danny Shiri DDS, we can make dental crowns from either porcelain or ceramic material and custom-create them to closely resemble your natural teeth. In addition to their restorative benefits, crowns also have aesthetic benefits and can be used for cosmetic purposes.
After numbing the damaged tooth and surrounding tissue, our dentist will prepare the tooth for the crown by removing the damaged part and some of its outer layer. An impression of the prepared tooth is then taken, which serves as a model for the dental laboratory to fabricate the crown. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being made.
On the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is checked for fit, shape, and color. Once approved, it is cemented or bonded onto the prepared tooth using a dental adhesive.
Dental crowns are made to last for many years with proper care, such as daily brushing and flossing. The resin used to make crowns is strong enough to withstand the normal wear and tear of day-to-day use over several years. However, it can chip or break under extreme force or due to trauma. Even though a crown is less likely to sustain damage than other restorations, you should still take extra care when biting into or chewing hard foods or if you are grinding or clenching your teeth to avoid potentially damaging your crown.
To maintain the longevity of dental crowns, it is essential to practice good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups. Avoiding habits such as biting on hard objects or grinding the teeth can help prevent damage to the crown. Additionally, regular dental examinations allow the dentist to monitor the condition of the crown and surrounding teeth.
